When I was nine, I drew a picture and mailed it to the Art Instruction Schools. A representative of the school arrived at our door unannounced. Surprised at my youth, he said, “You have a talent young man; call us when you graduate high school.”

When I finished school, internships were scarce and I started my career as an in-house designer for a construction firm.  I used my artistic ability to convert client ideas into drawings and relied on my technical skills to produce the plans.  Seeing my designs executed from concept to completion broadened my skills and construction knowledge.

My background taught me to understand and to utilize the link from imagination to illustration to technical drawing. In design, imagination produces ideas that solve needs or problems in strikingly new and different ways. Illustrations explain these ideas and technical drawings transform them into reality. The ability to use my skills and experience to help shape a client’s vision is a pursuit I relish. Ultimately, every client should expect these characteristics from a designer. Don’t you agree?

Growing up, I learned fashion sewing, pottery, and making pasta from my immigrant grandmother. My mother, a painter and hair stylist, allowed me to rearrange our home’s furniture at my every whim. The creative streak started early.

In high school, I enrolled in a co-operative education program. The modern interior, collaborative atmosphere, and fast pace of my job at a design/build firm inspired me. I enjoyed spending time at construction sites, but I absorbed the interior design and architectural publications. That year focused my interest on interior design.

I excelled at architectural design and drafting in college, but favored interior design for its tactility of materials, color science, and three-dimensional aspects. After graduation, my internship at a large design firm proved I needed freedom to express my ideas. I departed for experience in various firms where I learned client development and honed my skills in space planning, material distribution, technical product research, procurement of furnishings, and logistics.
